Portugal
Luís Afonso is a photographer born in 1972 and currently based in Lisbon. He purchased his first camera in January 1997 and has been involved in the Primeira Luz training project since December 2010. Since then, he has led nearly a hundred photographic experiences, including photo editing courses and workshops focused on street and nature photography, spanning across his country and its islands. Over two hundred participants have taken part in his sessions. He is a regular speaker at the main nature photography festivals in Portugal and has been invited multiple times to serve as a juror for some of the most prestigious national and international nature photography competitions. Since 2017, he has held the position of Content Director at the Manteigas Landscape Photography Festival – Imaginature. He has been published in National Geographic (Portugal and Spain) as well as several other publications, including Super Interessante, Visão, and Wilder. He has won several national and international awards, including distinctions in competitions such as the Natural Landscape Photography Awards (NLPA) and Close-up Photographer of the Year (CUPOTY). Since 2008, he has focused exclusively on photographing nature in Portugal and Spain. In 2017, he published his first book, which features photographs dedicated to the municipality of Porto de Mós, where he conducts much of his work. His second book, released in October 2020 and centered on intimate landscape photography, sold out within just two months. His third book, which explores the wild orchids of central Portugal, is also sold out. Luís enjoys photographing locations in his country with which he can cultivate a long-standing relationship. He prefers to capture intimate views rather than grand vistas, as he believes that nature photography should convey more than just “this is what I saw.”
